Minecraft Weekly, Issue Number Four! (253/365)

Hello everyone, and welcome to issue number four, of our Minecraft weekly news feature. I’ve got an update for you guys today! Today Jonah and I talk will talk about the new snapshot, and update to the pocket edition of Minecraft, and some really exciting news for Minecraft. However, first off, the snapshot.

A new snapshot was released this past Thursday. Mojang is adding quite a few features to Minecraft these days. Some of the latest updates are kind of scary too. Which would make sense considering the they are aiming to make 1.4 release on Halloween. Yep, we might get another Halloween update, except this one will be cooler. Let’s take a look at some of the nicer additions.

Let’s start off with the scary stuff. There are 3 (yes, 3!) new mobs. Sort of. 1 of them was added in the last snapshot but was only available through hacks. The other two are variants of older mobs.

First, the Wither. This mob was added two weeks ago but now you can spawn it without hacks. Well, not spawn exactly…more like create.

The Wither is created in the same way that an Iron Golem is. The difference, you need Soul Sand and 3 Wither heads (we’ll get to heads in a minute).

These guys are mean and will kill every passive creature in the world (Pigs, Cows, Villagers…everything). And yes, that includes Steve. They can fly and they shoot explosive Wither heads, similar to Ghasts. They take a while to kill, they can regenerate health, and if they hurt you, your hearts will turn black for a while. It will show 10 black hearts all the time, even if you have 2. That’s the point, you won’t know how much health you have left. Yeah, scary.

Next up, the two variants. Number one is the Wither Skeleton.

They are taller than normal skeletons, they carry a stone sword, they only spawn in the Nether, they also cause the Wither effect when you take damage, and they are black skeletons.
Finally, here is the Wither Jockey. Yeah, really scary. Don’t worry, this can only be spawned in the Nether using a spider egg. You won’t find it in Survival mode.

Let’s talk about heads. There are five new decoration heads. Steve, Skeleton, Zombie, Creeper, and Wither. The only one you can get in-game are the Wither heads. The other ones can only be found in Creative. Use them to scare away any mob that is thinking about trying to kill you. Note: that doesn’t actually work.

You can wear them too!

You can now ride on a pig’s back and steer them! Using the carrot on a stick item (carrot on a fishing pole, really) you can point to pig in the direction you want to go. Right-click to make Piggy go faster. They can’t jump though. Sad day.

Last, but not least. The beacon block was re-added. It looks different now and it actually has a name, “Beacon.” Go figure.

It is crafted using this new item, the Nether Star. Withers drop it when/if you manage to kill it.

That is all for the snapshot news. Onto the Pocket Edition update.

Well, this week, there was a new update for the pocket edition. This update adds a lot of new features, most of the features are survival-related.

Here is the list of all the new addition in this update:

New features:

  • Chests to store items- Kinda sad to think that they couldn’t store items before this isn’t it?
  • Beds to skip night and setting your spawn point
  • Creepers!- Just what we all need, mobile creepers. Now you can carry your creeper wherever you go!
  • TNT, and flint and steel to ignite- Best part about the update if you ask me.
  • Food items added: apples, bread, mushroom soup, beef, chicken and pork
  • Added recipes: wool from string, green wool and stone bricks
  • Added a Peaceful Mode option for survival mode without monsters
  • Added wheat, seeds and hoe
  • Added moss stone, redstone ore and white wool to creative inventory
  • Added trap door
  • Red dye can be obtained by cooking red mushroom
  • Added several more dyes (combined from primary dyes)
  • Zombies now drop feathers

  • Made the day longer
  • Limited the total number of a given monster type
  • When using an item, the player’s movement speed is decreased

As you may have noticed, this update is very different from normal. While 4J studios is updating the Xbox edition of Minecraft in a similar order to how the pc version updated, it seems that the Pocket Edition is updating with whatever features they can cram in. Well, that still works, as there is a lot more to MPE now.

Now this is really cool. This is our featured news story for this post. A while ago, a program called ‘My Blocks’ gave people the chance to re-envision public areas such as parks, or buildings around where the lived, using Minecraft to do so. It seems that the program has had such success that the UN(United Nations) has taken an interest in it. This is the same UN that deals with issues all around the world, where leaders come together to make decisions and avoid wars. It’s really kind of crazy. Sadly, wars are not going to be fought in Minecraft instead of real life.

The UN and Mojang have grouped together to make ‘Block by Block,’ where youth can envision how they would like to see the cities of the future. They are already planning some new buildings in Kibera. Now, this shows some serious progress. Never before has a videogame had so much influence, that the United Nations has put interest behind it and funded it. Due to Minecraft, it might be possible for the public to create cities they way that they want them. It would allow a higher sense of democracy behind the people, as they  could be in control of an entire city’s architecture. Kinda cool if you ask me. Although it could have a drawbacks. Considering most youths, I would say that the cities of the futures are gigantic Nyan cats and unmentionables. Do we really want that?

That is all for the news today. Thanks for reading and Happy Mining!
