Hello world, and welcome to…
In case you aren’t already aware, this is the final post in this series that has existed for almost a year. The final episode of LOST was named “The End,” so I decided that was a fitting enough title for this post as well.
The series finale was highly disputed among viewers. Some loved it, some hated it.
I loved it.
Riley hated it.
Tyler never finished Season 3 (yes Tyler, I am judging you).
I could rant about those who didn’t like/understand the finale, but I won’t. I’ve tried explaining it to people before…didn’t work too well.
Warning: This is a long post. It’s an awesome post, I think, but long. You’ve been warned.
Last week we visited The Black Rock in order to get some dynamite to blow up the plane on Hydra Island. Then a ghost told Hurley that if they destroyed the plane, a lot of people would die. So, instead of destroying the plane, we destroyed The Black Rock. Now what do we do?
On the way back to the beach, Jacob appears. Except now everyone can see him, not just Hurley.
Step 1: Have a chat with Jacob
He asks that someone replace him now before it is too late. Instead of choosing someone, he gives them the choice he never had. Jack volunteers and then it begins.
Step 2: Become the new Jacob
Jacob disappears forever. You return to Hurley, Sawyer and Kate, and make your way to the heart of the island.
Step 3: As Locke, enter the heart of the island.
Step 4: Remove “the cork.”
Locke leaves and goes to his boat so he can leave the island.
Once Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sawyer make it to the heart, Locke is already gone and the light has been extinguished.
Jack goes inside to check it out.
He sees that the light has indeed been extinguished and he knows that Locke is now going to leave. You know where his boat is and you chase after him.
Step 5: As Jack, catch up to Locke and stop him from leaving.
On the way there you notice that the island is crumbling and earthquakes make it hard to keep your balance.
Locke turn around and then some awesome music starts playing. I must mention that this point in the episode is just really awesome. You hear Jack scream, Locke turns around, awesome music courtesy of Michael Giacchino starts playing, and you just know that shit’s about to go down.
Jack and Locke fight for a bit, Jack gets stabbed, Locke is about to kill him and then Kate shows up and shoots Locke in the back. Locke says “You’re too late.” And then Jack gains 10 awesome points when he kicks Locke down the cliff…like a boss.
The island is still crumbling and Jack knows that he has to put the cork back in. In case it doesn’t work, he tells everyone else to head toward the plane, where Lapidus is, and get off the island. Hurley and Ben stay with Jack, and Sawyer and Kate go to the plane.
Step 6: Say your final goodbyes, and head to the heart of the island.
You, Hurley and Ben make it to the heart and Jack, knowing that going down there is a death sentence, says that he is going in alone.
For the record, the deaths of Charlie, Sayid, Jin and Sun were all horribly depressing. But this scene, may very well be even more depressing.
Hurley is telling Jack that he can’t go down there, that he won’t let him die. Jack says that this is what he is supposed to do. This goes on for a while, until Jack tells Hurley that he is supposed to be the new protector. Hurley drinks some blessed water and becomes the new man in charge. He asks Ben to help him out and be his #2 guy.
Jack goes down into the heart.
Step 7: Put “the cork” back in and save the island.
The light’s back on, the island stops crumbling, and you disappear.
Step 8: As Sawyer and Kate, make it to Hydra Island and get on the plane before it leaves.
The plane takes off, and you leave the island along with Miles, Lapidus, Richard, and Claire.
Jack wakes up near a pond. Although not dead, he is dying.
He limps his way around until he makes it to his final resting place. The stroke of brilliance by the writers that I actually didn’t see coming. Jack returns to the place where he woke up after the plane crash, and lies down.
Vincent runs up to him and lies beside him as he dies.
Jack looks up to the sky and sees the plane flying overhead, and knows that he succeeded. He saved the island and his friends.
You see Jack’s eye close as he dies and then…
